The Finance team within GMC is located in London and provides accounting support to GMC and GuarantCo. The Financial Controller will actively work with the Finance Director to ensure GMC and GuarantCo’s core financial deliverables are achieved.


The Financial Controller will take on a broad remit, overseeing and managing the financial operations, accounting and treasury of GuarantCo and GMC. This individual will be expected to strive for continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment, streamlining controls and processes where necessary and developing the team.


GuarantCo Ltd (GuarantCo) mobilises private sector local currency investment for infrastructure projects and supports the development of financial markets in lower income countries across Africa and Asia. GuarantCo is part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) and is funded by the governments of the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia and Sweden, through the PIDG Trust, and the Netherlands, through FMO, the Dutch Development Bank and the PIDG Trust.


GuarantCo is rated AA- by Fitch and A1 by Moody’s. The company’s vision is to become a centre of excellence for local currency credit solutions for infrastructure finance in lower income countries thereby assisting with the alleviation of poverty.


GuarantCo’s funds, through GuarantCo Management Company (GMC), are managed by Cardano Development, a Dutch foundation with charitable status. GMC is the day-to-day manager of GuarantCo and is head-quartered in the City of London, with regional hubs in Nairobi and Singapore. The GMC team is small, diverse, focused, collaborative and action orientated. We are looking for candidates who have the experience to deliver against the responsibilities of the role and who are passionate about making a difference whilst working in an entrepreneurial and innovative environment.


Key responsibilities: 

  • Manage a team of two trainee accountants (Finance Officer and Finance Manager) and one Finance Business Partner.
  • Responsible for managing the month-end accounting processes for GuarantCo and GMC and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Responsible for overseeing financial operations, including payments and invoicing.
  • Oversee the completion of GuarantCo’s quarterly management accounts and Annual Statutory Accounts under IFRS.
  • Oversee the completion of GMC’s half year management accounts and Annual Statutory Accounts under FRS 102.
  • Main point of contact for all tax advisors and responsible for ensuring all tax deadlines are met.
  • With support from the Finance Manager, lead on the audit process for GuarantCo and GMC.
  • Manage the treasury function and support the Finance Director and Chief Risk Officer manage liquidity risk.
  • Ownership of financial controls and processes.
  • Support the Finance Director to identify and execute cost saving initiatives
  • Involvement in ad hoc project work, including a planned project to review application of IFRS 9.


Core Competencies:

  • Degree educated or equivalent with formal accounting qualifications; ACA, ACCA or equivalent
  • Experience in a hands-on finance manager or financial controller role in a small to medium sized business – ideally development finance experience or working in financial services
  • IFRS based financial and statutory reporting
  • Proficient in the use of desktop programmes including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word
  • Experience using finance systems and ability to pick up new systems quickly
  • Exceptional communication skills, with an ability to express complex issues succinctly and clearly
  • Experience of overseeing, motivating and mentoring team members
  • Personable and professional, adept at building relationships
  • Fast-paced, flexible and resilient

  • Cultural awareness


Desirable experience

  • Familiarity and experience with IFRS 9
  • Experience in using Business Central by Microsoft.
