Health, Safety, Environmental and Social (HSES) management is a strategic priority for GuarantCo and PIDG.


GMC has developed a comprehensive HSES Management System (MS) for GuarantCo to manage HSES risk of GuarantCo’s transactions and portfolio. GMC wishes to recruit an HSES Advisor, based in our Nairobi office, to support the GMC HSES Team in the implementation of the HSES MS, including undertaking and reporting on HSES due diligence of transactions pre-financial close, HSES monitoring and assurance on transactions post financial close, and to support internal and external HSES reporting.

The role holder is expected to support the HSES Team and GMC to deliver consistently high quality HSES performance across all business activities.


Although working within GMC, the HSES function has an important and independent functional reporting line to PIDG HSES and PIDG HSES Director. This allows the GMC HSES function access to the PIDG-wide HSES strategy and culture, and to maintain a close, collaborative working relationship across the PIDG Group.


The HSES Advisor must be passionate about making a difference whilst working in a fast paced and innovative environment.


GuarantCo mobilises private sector local currency investment for infrastructure projects and supports the development of financial markets in lower income countries across Africa and Asia. GuarantCo is part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) and is funded by the governments of the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia and Sweden, through the PIDG Trust, the Netherlands, through FMO and the PIDG Trust, France through a stand-by facility and Global Affairs Canada through a repayable facility.


GuarantCo is rated AA- by Fitch and A1 by Moody’s. The company’s vision is to become a centre of excellence for local currency credit solutions for infrastructure finance in lower income countries thereby assisting with the alleviation of poverty.


GuarantCo’s funds, through GuarantCo Management Company (GMC), are managed by Cardano Development, a Dutch foundation with charitable status. GMC is the day-to-day manager of GuarantCo and is head-quartered in the City of London, with regional hubs in Nairobi and Singapore. The team is small, diverse, focused, collaborative and action orientated. We are looking for candidates who have the experience to deliver against the responsibilities of the role and who are passionate about making a difference whilst working in an entrepreneurial and innovative environment.


The main work streams of the HSES Advisor role are:


Implementation of the HSES MS

  • Support HSES team in implementing the HSES Management System (MS).
  • Support GMC to comply with internal GMC health and safety matters, such as incident reporting and safe travel procedures.
  • Support delivery of HSES training and awareness programmes to GMC team members.
  • Provide HSES input into GMC’s internal and external HSES reports.


Pipeline and portfolio specifics:

  • Support the management of HSES risk throughout the credit process/ deal flow, including: screening new opportunities against PIDG policies and exclusions, categorizing transactions according to HSES risk, supporting HSES due diligence in accordance with the HSES risk management framework, contributing to and reviewing HSES due diligence reports, developing / inputting to HSES Action Plans.
  • Review portfolio HSES monitoring reports against the HSES Action Plan and HSES requirements to confirm compliance or otherwise identify and raise issues/early warnings.
  • Support engagement with clients to discuss HSES issues.



  • Support GMC to meet the PIDG Climate Change Strategy and Standard
  • Actively engage with GMC and PIDG group-wide HSES meetings and strategy.
  • Work closely with the PIDG HSES team to ensure compliance with the PIDG HSES Policies and Standards, and that all business activities are performed consistently and to the highest of standards.
  • Engage in site visits as part of due diligence (DD) and/or assurance and monitoring from time to time.
  • Any other reasonable duties as may be assigned by GMC or PIDG from time to time.
  • Some travel is expected between the three GuarantCo offices and to pipeline and portfolio project sites.
  • Post completion of a probation period and considering workload demands, there may be an opportunity to broaden the role to include PIDG group responsibilities and duties.




  • A degree in a science, engineering, or equivalent subject.
  • Ability to travel (Africa, South Asia / South East Asia).
  • Experience in or knowledge of risk assessment, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment or management, or Occupational Health and Safety.



  • A postgraduate degree / qualification in an HSES science or other relevant discipline.
  • Knowledge of IFC standards and UN Global Sustainability Goals.
  • Specific training and/or experience in HSES aspects of water, sewage, power, transport, housing, roads, infrastructure and/or natural resources sectors.



  • Strong English language verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate in other languages is desirable.
  • Good networker and relationship builder.
  • Analytical ability, problem solving, ability to think laterally.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly in a technical area of work, and to understand and navigate complex issues.
